Luis Rodil-Fernández (1977, Asturias, Spain) is an artist, researcher, teacher and hacker that taught himself computer programming by cracking computer games as a child. Luis studied computer science in the University of Oviedo but dropped out to work as a software developer while living in England and The Netherlands. Later returned to academia to earn a BA with Honours at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and a Masters in Music from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. His work is concerned with the impact that technologies have on cognition and the human body with particular emphasis in movement and embodied interfaces. Through performances, installations and social games, his work proposes a critical approach to human-computer interactions rooted in movement. He is part of the Qualified Self project an international research-creation programme that aims at exploring the expressive potential of the new wave of biosensing technologies that are marketed under the moniker of Quantified Self. He is co-founder of Algo Research Systems, a platform for researchers, curators and artists that investigate how the increasing automation of society alters the social order, creates mythical narratives around technologies and subjects the human to systematic automatisms.

[:en]Mike Rijnierse is an artist known for his large scale site specific installations, where the audience gets incorporated into the context of the work. In 2005 he developed the 16 channel sound installation PAN which stretched out along a 170 meter path inside of the sculpture garden of the Kröller-Müller Museum for the opening of Kijk Uit!/Attention! by Krijn Giezen. In 2008 Mike received the BNG Project Price for the work LUMOKINESE, a kinetic light installation based on the interplay of light and color in its architectural context, which was shown in various places including the Transmediale in Berlin. The research on light and color in architectural context is an ongoing theme in the work of the artist. Apart from installations, he develops music theater as a member of the Rosa Ensemble, a contemporary music theater collective which operates more as a band than as a theater group. In which Mike is part of the whole development and performance on stage. His installations and performances are instruments in which dialogue and interaction are developed for sensory investigation, as a platform for interdisciplinary research. The relation of space and time or the geography and the perception of the observer are used as parameters for development of the muse. As a docent at Interaction Design department of ArtEZ Art Academy, Arnhem (NL) since 2009, Mike developed the course Design of Instruments. The course is focused on the development of new design tools and instruments. Mike Rijnierse was involved in the founding and the development of project and workspaces such as De Vloek, Scheveningen and DCR, The Hague. Today he is based at Quartair, Contemporary Artist Initiatives in The Hague, where he runs a studio together with Ludmila Rodrigues and is as part of the Quartair collective responsible for management and programming of the project space of Quartair. Stephanie Pan is a singer, maker, performance artist and multi-instrumentalist currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands. She performs in experimental music, new music, experimental theater, and early music, specializing in extended vocal techniques and live improvisation. At the root of her work is the notion of pure communication; finding a form of contact with the audience which is stripped of social expectations and distractions, that speaks beyond the conventional and social limitations and constructs of language. A mutating combination of theater/performance art/experimental music/improvisation/controlled chaos/pop music/classical music, her work is visceral, passionate and intense, and often explores the limits of the body and voice. She has performed throughout the US and Europe, and has presented both solo and collaborative work in venues and festivals as varied as CTM Festival Berlin, Young Vic Theatre London, Amsterdamse Stadsschouwburg, Incubate Festival, Dag in De Branding, dOCUMENTA, IDFA, Beursschouwburg Brussel, and Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. She has created and performed work with a wide variety of groups/collaborators such as acclaimed rebel theatre group Belarus Free Theatre, Rosa Ensemble, De Veenfabriek, filmmaker Jeanette Groenendaal, and composers Stelios Manousakis, Trevor Weston, Barbara Ellison and Jasna Velickovic. Stelios Manousakis (Crete, Greece, 1980) is a composer, performer, sound artist, and researcher. He operates across the convergence zones of art, science, and engineering / composition, performance, and installation / the rich tradition of western sonic art and ‘digital-folk’ idioms. His work is visceral yet cerebral, communicating through pure, raw experience while being complex and multilayered. His output extends from music performance – most often with live electronics – to intermedia and sound art installations, to fixed medium pieces and film music. Many of these works merge algorithmic finesse with the expressiveness of improvisation, or the immediacy of audience participation. They are often designed as emergent (eco)systems or organisms, unearthing rich and organic worlds through artistic reinventions of models from complexity science, cybernetics and biology. Manousakis’ work has been shown in festivals, venues, centers, museums and galleries across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. Besides his solo work, he has co-founded several music ensembles, multimedia groups, and most recently the intermedial ‘Modern Body Festival’. Manousakis studied music and linguistics in Greece, Sonology in the Netherlands, and is currently finishing a PhD in Visual and Performing Arts at the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS, University of Washington, Seattle, USA).

Tivon Rice’s work critically explores representation and communication in the context of digital technologies. Both fascinated with and wary of the speed of televisual media, Rice creates systems that pair immediate materials such as light, space, and tangible forms with live and recorded sound and video. With these installations, he engages spectators and participants with direct physical situations, as well as processes that unfold over longer durations. By activating one’s awareness of color, time, and space Rice creates opportunities for dynamic, active viewing. While his practice is primarily concerned with emerging social relationships to digital technology, Rice draws heavily from art historical themes. In doing so, he examines the conditions of surrealist and minimalist attitudes in contemporary new-media arts. This practice informs recent large-scale installations, as well as images and sculptures which incorporate the particular patterns, textures, and processes inherent in digital media. Rice (b. 1978) is a 2011-12 Fulbright Scholar, and a PhD candidate at the University of Washington’s Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media, where he teaches courses in Video Art and Installation.
