Competition Overview

Paris, a city celebrated for its rich history, cultural heritage, and iconic architecture, is now facing a new era of transformation. As the population continues to grow and the urban landscape evolves, the city must address the pressing challenges of sustainability, technological integration, and evolving social needs. The Future Living in Paris competition invites architects, designers, and visionaries from around the world to rethink the concept of home within the context of Paris’s dynamic urban environment. With its dense urban fabric, diverse population, and commitment to sustainability, Paris provides a unique opportunity to reimagine residential living for the future. The city’s historical neighborhoods, coupled with ambitious urban renewal projects and the challenges posed by climate change, create both opportunities and constraints for architects. The competition calls for bold, creative solutions that respect Paris’s architectural heritage while addressing modern-day needs, ensuring a sustainable and adaptable future for its residents. Participants will be tasked with creating innovative residential concepts that align with Paris’s evolving identity as a global leader in sustainable living, while embracing the latest technological advances and design trends. The competition encourages forward-thinking proposals that balance Paris’s storied past with its future aspirations, fostering a new understanding of how people will live, work, and interact in the coming decades.

Design Brief

Participants are tasked with proposing a design for a multi-functional residential and resort space that addresses the future of living and leisure within the unique context of Paris. The design should integrate innovative solutions for sustainability, technology, community, and wellness, while embracing the charm and heritage of Parisian architecture.

The design should address the following key themes:

A. Sustainability in the Urban & Resort Context:
How can residential and resort spaces in Paris respond to environmental challenges? Consider the integration of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, green spaces, and water conservation techniques. How can the design meet the city’s commitment to sustainability while providing a resort-like experience that doesn’t compromise on luxury or functionality?

B. Technology & Smart Living in Paris:
How can technology be integrated into residential and resort spaces to create seamless, smart environments? Consider intelligent home systems, AI-powered personalizations, health tracking, and energy management. How can digital innovations enhance both the quality of life for residents and the overall resort experience for visitors?

C. Modular, Flexible, and Adaptive Design Solutions:
How can the design accommodate diverse user needs? Consider multi-functional spaces that evolve over time—residential units that can easily adapt for long-term living or as short-term resort accommodations. Think about how the architecture can respond to fluctuating populations, work dynamics (including remote work), and changes in lifestyle over time.

D. Health, Wellness, & Recreation:
Paris is a city with a growing focus on well-being, from its world-class parks to its emphasis on active lifestyles. How can the design incorporate wellness into both residential and resort environments? Consider elements such as biophilic design, access to nature, fitness and relaxation facilities, spas, water features, and recreational areas. How can architecture encourage both mental and physical health through its integration with the natural environment and surrounding urban context?

E. Social Connectivity & Community Engagement:
How can both residential and resort spaces foster social interaction and strengthen community bonds? Propose communal areas such as co-working spaces, shared gardens, cultural events, or leisure facilities that promote social interaction, creativity, and cultural exchange. Think about how the design can connect residents, visitors, and locals in meaningful ways.

F. Blending Residential and Resort in the Parisian Urban Fabric:
How can the design of a residential community also serve as a resort? Explore how leisure and residential spaces can blend together in the Parisian context, where urban density meets cultural tourism. Can the architecture offer a peaceful retreat from the city while still being centrally located? What kind of unique architectural features can transform a residential area into a “resort-like” environment?

G. Space Optimization & Urban Density:
Paris is an iconic city with a growing population and limited available land. How can the design of both residential and resort spaces make the most of available space without compromising comfort, privacy, or accessibility? How can high-density urban areas be designed to feel spacious and welcoming, integrating private and public elements smoothly?

Site Selection

Participants are free to choose a site within the city of Paris for their design proposal. The selected site should be chosen thoughtfully and should contribute meaningfully to the overall vision of the competition.

Key Criteria for Site Selection:

A. Contextual Relevance:
The chosen site should be situated within the urban fabric of Paris, taking into account its existing architecture, cultural heritage, and local context. The site should enable the design to respond effectively to both the historical and modern aspects of the city.

B. Impact on the Surrounding Environment:
The site should allow for the design to make a positive contribution to its immediate surroundings, whether through regeneration, revitalization, or the enhancement of existing public spaces.

C. Personal Justification:
Participants must provide a clear and compelling explanation for why their chosen site is ideal for the competition brief. This should address how the site’s characteristics align with the vision for future living and resort design, and how the proposal will positively influence the neighborhood and city at large.
